Global Fund for Women Awards $1.8 Million to Women's Groups
Funds for programs to end gender-based violence, build peace, promote women’s health, sexual and reproductive rights.
SAN FRANCISCO
– The Global Fund for Women is giving $1.8 million in grants to
extraordinary grassroots women’s groups in 59 countries. The awards
range from seed grants of $500 to multi-year grants of $100,000.
At a time when government and charitable resources around the world are shrinking, the Global Fund for Women is committed to ensuring that its funding for women human rights remains steady. “Though the crisis is hitting women and girls hard, they remain the single most effective investment we can make to improve prospects for peace, stability and equitable development,” says Global Fund President and CEO Kavita N. Ramdas.
The $1.8 million will be disbursed among 128 grants in five regions:
Grantees include:
• Positive Women’s Network (PWN), a South African advocacy group for HIV-positive women that challenges international patent law on AIDS drugs. PWN joined other organizations to file cases against pharmaceutical companies charging prohibitive prices for HIV/AIDS drugs.
• The Women’s Legal Bureau (WLB) in the Philippines confronts domestic and sexual violence by training community-based paralegals to assist rape victims. In addition, its coalition efforts helped to pass anti-rape and trafficking laws.
• In Republic of Georgia, the Women Employment Innovative Center works to close the gender gap in politics by raising awareness about the importance of women in politics, offer workshops to women interested in holding public office, and campaign for female candidates during the 2010 local elections.
• KAFA (Enough) Violence and Exploitation, aims to put an end to violence against women in Lebanon. Its efforts include creating a committee of experts and stakeholders to draft what, if passed, will be the first domestic violence law in the Arab region.
Other activities:
• Documenting women’s history in Yemen
• Organizing workshops about trafficking in Azerbaijan
• Promoting social ecology in West Java
• Addressing homophobic discrimination against LGBT prisoners in Argentina
• Fighting food insecurity in Kenya
• Advocating for equal treatment under labor laws in Bulgaria

- $349,000 to 25 groups in the Americas;
- $432, 500 to 30 groups in Asia/Oceania;
- $296,000 to 19 groups in Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States;
- and $316,000 to 21 groups in the Middle East/North Africa.
Grantees include:
